History
1961
Our story begins in 1954 when President Getúlio Vargas proposed the creation of Eletrobras, now AXIA Energia. The idea initially faced resistance and was only approved by the National Congress in the following decade, when in 1961 President Jânio Quadros signed Law 3.890-A, authorizing the company's founding.
1962
On June 11, 1962, Eletrobras was officially founded – with a formal ceremony at the Laranjeiras Palace in Rio de Janeiro, attended by President João Goulart. From day one, its mission was to drive Brazil's development through electricity. The company was responsible for studying, planning, building, and operating power plants, transmission lines, and substations, bringing electricity to the most remote corners, making an essential contribution to Brazil's growth. Desde o primeiro dia, tinha como missão impulsionar o desenvolvimento do Brasil por meio da energia elétrica. A empresa ficou responsável por estudar, planejar, construir e operar usinas geradoras, linhas de transmissão e subestações, levando eletricidade aos cantos mais remotos, contribuindo de forma essencial para o crescimento do Brasil.
1970
The 1970s were marked by the construction of several power plants across the country, including the expansion of the network to the Northeast and the regulation of the flow of the São Francisco river.
1973
The Sobradinho Dam, whose construction began in 1973, formed one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. Also in 1973, the Itaipu Treaty between Brazil and Paraguay was signed, leading to the creation of Itaipu Binacional, the company responsible for the construction of the plant, with 50% equity from the neighboring country's state-owned company, Administración Nacional de Eletricidad (ANDE), and 50% from Eletrobras, currently known as AXIA Energia.
1974
The Center of Excellence in Electric Energy Research (CEPEL), opened in 1974 in partnership with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, was one of the company's pioneering initiatives focused on innovation. To conclude a brilliant decade, then-Eletrobras acquired Light, which at the time was the largest private energy company in the country.
1980
During the 1980s, the collaborative collection Memória da Eletricidade (Electricity Memory) was launched to preserve the history of the Brazilian electricity sector. The collection serves as a HUB for collecting, organizing, and generating content, using the past to understand the present and project the future, aggregating knowledge in the sector that serves as input for innovations for future generations.
1984
In 1984, one of the country's most important power plants was delivered: the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant.
1990
With the beginning of the 1990s, the electricity sector underwent significant transformations. Institutional reforms and privatizations changed the profile of Eletrobras, now AXIA Energia, which, by legal mandate and on a temporary basis, also began operating energy distribution in states such as Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Piauí, Rondônia, and Roraima.
2008
The company's internationalization process began in 2008, when the first studies on hydroelectric plants, transmission lines, and renewable energy were conducted in countries throughout the Americas. The goal was to aid in the electrical integration of Latin America, always focusing on renewable energy sources and reducing environmental impacts — especially in relation to the region's enormous hydroelectric potential.
2018
The energy distribution phase was completed in 2018, marking the company's exit from the segment. These changes were part of a major restructuring that included a reduction in the number of Special Purpose Entities (SPEs) and the merger of operations that created Eletrobras CGT Eletrosul – combining the subsidiaries Eletrobras, Eletrosul and Companhia de Geração Térmica de Energia Elétrica (Eletrobras CGTEE), all currently known as AXIA Energia. Furthermore, Eletrobras Amazonas GT was incorporated into Eletrobras Eletronorte, consolidating operations and further strengthening the company.
2021
In February 2021, Provisional Measure No. 1,031/2021 included Eletrobras, currently known as AXIA Energia, in the National Privatization Program (PND), allowing BNDES to conduct the technical studies necessary for the transaction. Em julho, a medida foi convertida na Lei nº 14.182/2021, garantindo a autorização legislativa necessária para o avanço da privatização. Em outubro do mesmo ano, o Conselho do Programa de Parcerias de Investimentos (PPI) aprovou oficialmente o modelo da desestatização.
2022
As part of this transformation, to facilitate the ongoing privatization, completed in June 2022, a corporate restructuring was carried out that ensured the continuation of Itaipu Binacional and Eletronuclear under federal control – now represented by the National Nuclear and Binational Energy Holding Company (ENBPar). Thus, both remained under federal government control, as required by law. On June 14, 2022, a historic moment occurred: the traditional ringing of the bell at B3, the São Paulo stock exchange, marked the company's capitalization. A symbol of a turning point. It was then that the company began operating as a world-class corporation, with dispersed capital and a new energy brought by investors who believe in our future and the power of the Brazilian electricity sector. Em 14 de junho de 2022, um momento histórico: o tradicional toque da campainha na B3, a bolsa de valores de São Paulo, marcou a capitalização da empresa. Símbolo da virada. Foi então que a empresa passou a operar como uma corporação de padrão internacional, com capital pulverizado e uma nova energia trazida por investidores que acreditam no nosso futuro e na potência do setor elétrico brasileiro.

Today, we actively participate in the generation, transmission, and commercialization of electricity in Brazil. A new chapter in the company's history, which arrives with the same mission to continue leading Brazil's energy transformation – with all the strength and power of those who have always been at the center of the electricity sector's development, but with the ability to articulate a new era and the purpose of catalyzing business with our energy.
