Regional Founds

What Are the Regional Funds?

Through the Regional Funds, we carry out the annual transfer of resources to programs aimed at reducing power generation costs in the Amazon region and revitalizing water resources in various parts of Brazil.

With an annual investment of nearly BRL 900 million, this initiative seeks to promote sustainable development in Brazil by balancing environmental preservation and economic growth.

These resources, applied over 10 years, are being transformed into projects and actions that improve the quality and quantity of water in the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins and in the area of the Furnas Hydroelectric Power Plant, while also ensuring programs for more clean energy in the Amazon region.

Water Resources Revitalization

The revitalization of water resources is a set of actions focused on preserving, conserving, and restoring river basins. These areas are essential for environmental balance and for ensuring water supply for various uses.

To organize the allocation of resources, two specific accounts were created:
CPR São Francisco and Parnaíba: focused on the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins;

CPR Furnas: directed to the area of influence of the reservoirs of the Furnas hydroelectric power plants.

These accounts fund actions that help maintain and increase the amount of water available in the rivers, also contributing to the proper functioning of the reservoirs—without compromising the different uses of water, such as consumption, agriculture, and power generation.

The types of actions funded include:

  •   Fostering water infiltration into the soil

  •   Reducing sediment runoff caused by rain

  •   Promoting conscious water use and combating waste

  •   Ensuring proper aquifer recharge

  •   Controlling the pollution of water bodies

  •   Preventing extreme floods and droughts

  •   Ensuring water availability and quality for multiple uses

  •   Adopting an integrated view of the territory

  •   Sharing information, best practices, and knowledge on water and soil conservation.

Pro-Legal Amazon Program

We invest in structuring initiatives for the Legal Amazon region, focusing on reducing power generation costs, improving navigation on the Madeira and Tocantins rivers, and supporting the interconnection between Manaus and Boa Vista.
To organize the allocation of resources, two specific accounts were created:
CDAL (Legal Amazon Development Account): exclusively aimed at financing projects that help reduce power generation costs in the region;
CDN (Navigability Development Account): aimed at projects that improve navigation on the Madeira and Tocantins rivers.

The types of actions funded include:

  •   Connecting isolated systems and remote regions to the National
  •   Interconnected System (SIN);
  •   Implementing new renewable energy supply solutions, with or without storage;
  •   Promoting energy efficiency in remote areas and isolated systems;
  •   Reducing energy losses in these regions;
  •   Allocating resources for social and environmental offsets, such as in the Manaus–Boa Vista interconnection project;
  •   Improving the navigability of the region’s strategic rivers.

How we ensure the responsible use of Regional Funds

Governance

The coordination of the Regional Funds is carried out by the federal government, through three Management Committees that bring together representatives from different ministries and civil society. These committees are responsible for planning and monitoring the implementation of the actions supported by the funds, ensuring greater transparency and effectiveness.

add

CPR Furnas Managing Committee

It is responsible for defining and reviewing the work plan. Its duties include planning actions, setting guidelines, monitoring results, and supervising the invested amounts, with the support of an independent audit.

add

CPR São Francisco and Parnaíba Managing Committee

It operates in the same way in managing actions related to the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins. It also defines annual work plans, evaluates guidelines, approves projects, and monitors the use of funds with audit support.

add

Pro-Legal Amazon Program Managing Committee

It coordinates actions aimed at reducing power generation costs and improving navigation on the Madeira and Tocantins rivers. It also monitors the implementation of projects financed through the CDAL (Legal Amazon Development Account) and CDN (Navigability Development Account), always supported by independent auditing.
